I love our viewers! What an interesting, adventurous and informed group of folks. I have had many special moments in my museum travels but Museum Access Moments gives me a chance to hear about your favorite museum moments.
From one of our younger viewers Ryan, sharing his thoughts about seeing a real musket in a Plymouth, MA museum while he was studying the Revolutionary War in school, to Val’s first visit to the Temple of Dendur at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in NYC and feeling as if she’d “set foot in Egypt”.
Whether we are standing in front of the Mona Lisa at the Louvre in Paris, on the flight deck of an aircraft carrier at the Intrepid Sea, Air and Space Museum on the Hudson River or watching wooden barrels being made by hand in a small whaling village at the Mystic Seaport Museum on the CT River, we are transported.
Museums have a magical way of touching our hearts AND opening them. They are great equalizers. By learning about different times and cultures, we are more accepting of our differences and we can celebrate one another.
I remember meeting a group of veterans that had flown aircraft in WWII. Many of them could not join us on a short flight that the Collings Foundation – Living Aviation Museum offered due to being less mobile, but I could see from their enthusiasm and pride that they had been transported to their younger years serving our country.
Another viewer named Kathe shared her story about the House of Slaves Museum on the West Coast of Africa where her ancestors were sold into slavery and walked through the “Door of No Return’ to board ships and sail to America. It was clearly an emotional moment for her.
Museums hold the world’s cultures and histories within their walls. I believe that they inspire learning and ignite our imaginations. I think what I love the most is having the opportunity we have through our series to bring museums to those that might not ever have the opportunity to visit one of these incredible national treasures in person.
So please keep sharing your favorite moments so we can share them with others. After all, we can all be lifelong learners right? Take a look at what our viewers are sharing!
